A complete set based on the Severne Psycho 102L 2024 and the Severne Freek 5.2 2026 was created for windsurfers who want to develop their freestyle and perform increasingly dynamic maneuvers.

The Psycho 102L is a compact freestyle board with a very short construction, parallel rails and low swing weight. This shape allows it to react quickly to the rider's movements, makes rotation easier and reduces the risk of catching the tail or nose during maneuvers.

The board is paired with the Freek 5.2, one of the most specialized freestyle sails in Severne's lineup. The five-batten construction provides stability, while the sail is also designed to quickly generate power and neutralize it almost immediately during ducks and other maneuvers.

Board: Severne Psycho 102L 2024

The Severne Psycho 102L is a specialized freestyle board. It's 209 cm long and 62.5 cm wide, making it very compact and quick to respond to the rider's movements. For the 102 model the manufacturer states a sail range of 3.6-5.9 m2 and a recommended rider weight range of 80-95 kg as a main board or 90-105 kg as a smaller board.

The ultra-short construction and reduced nose volume reduce swing weight, which makes it easier to rotate the board during tricks. The parallel rails, meanwhile, provide efficient acceleration and good stability while building up speed before a maneuver.

The Psycho also has a specially designed footstrap setup. The front footstraps are angled, which makes it easier to move into a switch stance during tricks. Double inserts also increase the mounting's resistance to heavy loads.

Sail: Severne Freek 5.2 2026

The Severne Freek 5.2 is a sail designed specifically for freestyle. Its construction focuses on combining stability, low weight and a fast response.

Five battens provide profile stability and a wide range of use, while the appropriately designed profile allows power needed for popping to be generated quickly and neutralized almost immediately during ducks.

An important feature of the Freek is also a raised center of effort, which increases the sail's usability while preparing to pop and allows power to be transferred to the board efficiently.

The 5.2 m2 size is designed to work on a 400 cm mast, so the Gorilla G2 400 used here matches the manufacturer's recommendation. For the 5.2, Severne also states a 166 cm boom and an RDM 400/430 mast.

Mast: Severne Gorilla G2 RDM 400

The Severne Gorilla G2 RDM 400 was chosen specifically to match the Freek 5.2. The manufacturer positions the Gorilla as a mast focused primarily on durability, while the RDM Red is the choice for maximum performance, and the RDM Blue is a compromise between weight and resistance.

The Gorilla G2 is heavier than more advanced RDM masts, but offers very high resistance to use and a 2-year unlimited warranty. In freestyle this is a significant advantage, since the rig is regularly exposed to impacts while learning tricks.

Extension: Severne Cyclop HD 36 cm

The Severne Cyclop HD 36 cm is a durable extension designed for RDM masts. The 36 cm version provides a large adjustment range and works well in sets where the ability to precisely set the trim matters.

Boom: Severne Metal 150-200

The Severne Metal 150-200 is an aluminum boom with a construction designed for sporty windsurfing. For the Freek 5.2 the manufacturer states 166 cm as the required boom length, so the Metal 150-200 used here provides an adequate adjustment range.

The boom is a good choice for freestyle, as it provides adequate stiffness and durability without needing a more expensive carbon boom.

Universal joint: Severne Tendon

The Severne Tendon uses a tendon-type joint, providing a secure connection between the rig and the board while maintaining free movement of the set.

This is a classic solution that works well in dynamic riding and freestyle.

Harness lines: Severne Fixed 30"

The Severne Fixed 30" is a fixed harness line with a length of 30". Compared to shorter freeride lines, a length of 30" gives more space between the boom and the harness, which fits well with the dynamic character of freestyle.

The fixed length also lets you keep an identical setting during subsequent sessions.

How does this set behave on the water?

The Psycho 102L + Freek 5.2 is a set focused on pop, rotation and control.

The board accelerates quickly and responds instantly to the rider's movements, and its compact construction reduces inertia during rotations. The Freek provides the power needed to pop, and then quickly moves into a neutral position during the maneuver.

This is equipment for active riding. Instead of simply sailing straight ahead, this is where the game of "what else can be spun around" begins.

Hydrosfera's opinion

This is a full-fledged freestyle set, not a versatile freeride set with a freestyle sail.

The biggest advantage is the consistency of the whole configuration. The Psycho 102L was designed specifically for freestyle, and the Freek 5.2 is one of Severne's most specialized sails for this discipline. The manufacturer positions the Psycho and the Freek as a natural pairing.

Thanks to its short construction and low swing weight, the Psycho makes rotations easier, while its 62.5 cm width and parallel rails let you quickly build up speed before a maneuver.

The Freek 5.2 adds exactly what freestyle needs on top of that: fast power generation, good pop and the ability to instantly release the sail during ducks.

The Gorilla G2 and the Metal aren't the most performance-oriented version of the rig, but in a set focused on intensive freestyle learning they have a big advantage: durability. Severne itself positions the Gorilla as an option for people for whom resistance to use is the priority.

In short: a very focused freestyle set for a rider who wants to develop maneuvers, improve their pop and rotation, and have equipment resistant to the inevitable encounters with water, the board and their own ideas.
