The X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft remains the fastest manned aircraft ever to fly. Co-designed by Jim Drake, a technical pioneer who also significantly influenced the development of windsurfing
and left a huge mark on Starboard design over the years. Jim's philosophy and knowledge made him a pleasure to work with.
Our new Foil Slalom board, the X-15, flies fast and high. Incredibly efficient in the air. Ridden by the fastest. Just like its namesake.

X-15 in detail

For 2023, 3 completely new slalom shapes with a focus on improved aerodynamics and specific high-speed optimization with small, low-drag foil wings. The revised nose rocker is much smaller to reduce lift and drag at high speeds, while the more swept nose softens the force that accompanies the board's dive and contact with the water. Further aerodynamic features include a gently convex deck and a very smooth tail end to reduce drag at high speeds as much as possible. The X-15 is incredibly lean in the wind and always wants to accelerate.

Aero Design

The concept of the side cutouts has been refined to the limits of possibility,
in buoyancy mode you can get enough speed to get on the foil,
so you can take off before you reach planing speed.
The board has a teardrop shape from bow to stern, which reduces water drag while
increasing aerodynamic efficiency.
As a result, the board is very slim and stable in the air.

Convex nose

Flat deck shape without any concavities, and even slightly convex for maximum efficiency.
The wind flows over the board with minimal resistance and allows for greater speed.

Lower mast rail

Thanks to the even lower mast rail, the center of gravity is lower, which significantly increases control over the board. This way, when entering gusts of wind,
unexpected board movements become easy to control.

Deep cutaways

The cuts have been enlarged to reduce drag before takeoff,
as well as speed up the transition to levitation by rapidly reducing
the board's contact area with the water as speed increases.

Rear Footstrap Position

For slalom speeds, the rear foot position is set more inward compared to upwind/downwind racing foil boards.
Here we have 79.9cm width, which allows to achieve higher speeds in downwind
and sail with a more comfortable position and reduced force on the back leg.

Extra Thin Pads

When floating in levitation, there are fewer impacts to absorb.
In fact, there are none at all. That's why we designed the pads to be
very thin for better control and kept the diamond grooves for a perfect grip.

Yulex Neoprene

Drake Footstraps are made from certified FSC, sustainably sourced
and plant-based Yulex foam. Thanks to its 85% natural rubber content, CO² emissions
during the production process are reduced by 80%. The remaining 15% of the synthetic neoprene is
retained for increased UV resistance.

The Carbon Reflex construction is our lightest, proven flagship construction
and has one of the lowest warranty rates in the industry. Using the lightest
biaxial carbon provides a better feel, more responsiveness and a more controlled flex
than conventional boards. On the water, this construction will give you the ultimate performance.
It provides the most direct feedback from the foil and allows for faster, more precise movements.
